Morningstar Farms has yummy sausage

January 4, 2010 by hollie Food and Recipe Reviews

I’m not a sausage fan in general. Even before I stopped eating meat I avoided any meat that you could put quotation marks around – as in, sausage contains “meat”, and by “meat” we really mean: entrails. However, Greg just made some Morningstar Farms Veggie Sausage Patties, and while I usually think fake meat is terrifying, these little [...]

Barley eludes me

January 4, 2010 by hollie Recipes I Try From Books:

For the last couple weeks I’ve been trying to make Barley Casserole, from Alicia Silverstone’s yummy new book, The Kind Diet. I finally had to post on her website’s forums today:
I’ve tried this three times, but I can’t get past the barley. Each time the barley gets either burnt or turns to mush.
The directions say:
“Bring [...]

21-Day Vegan Kickstart

January 4, 2010 by hollie Going Vegan

Feel like going vegan for the New Year? If you head over to 21daykickstart.org, you can try a vegan diet for 21 days and see how it feels, in a program designed by the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine. I’m not sure I can go from vegetarian to vegan in 21 days, but I do [...]

Hollie’s Hummus

January 3, 2010 by hollie Recipes

This is one of my favorite vegan snacks which can easily become a meal if paired with some fruit and/or veg. I put some white beans (that I soaked the night before and then cooked that day) into the Cuisinart. Maybe about two cups or so. I don’t measure, because I don’t believe in measuring. [...]

Bringing in the new year with some kale, yo!

January 1, 2010 by hollie Posts with Photos

Greg took this a couple minutes before the clock struck midnight. I made sure to be drinking right at the moment the new year arrived (at least for Seattle’s clocks), and then had to give kale-flavored kisses (it could have been worse – I know how to make garlic soup).
I’m really really really looking forward [...]

Happy New Year everyone!

December 31, 2009 by hollie Going Vegan

I hope everyone is going to have an awesome evening! I’m at home with the guys and the kids, enjoying a quiet evening. I dislike crowds and traffic, so staying home tonight is actually a nice treat. We’re going to watch some fireworks on the TV pretty soon, and until then I was reading some [...]

Vegetarian for 12 days; still alive and happy

December 16, 2009 by hollie Going Vegan

Honestly, I wasn’t sure this was possible! While driving around town the other day, I was musing on this to Greg, who said that he thinks the reason it’s stuck when it’s never stuck before is that I’m doing it for myself, not to fit into a group or to “be the person you think [...]

Responses to my change to vegetarianism

December 10, 2009 by hollie Going Vegan

I got so many great responses to my last post, that I thought I’d try to respond to points in another post. I’m sure I’ll forget some things, but just nudge me if I do!
Such great comments! I feel like I’m going to miss stuff, but I’ll try to get to everything:
1) Yup, I’ve read [...]
