Young man, there’s no need to feel down…..

They might want to wear something more comfortable in the weight room.

…..I said, YOUNG MAN, come and get your free personal training…..ummm…..

I joined our local YMCA back in August when we moved in, and I’ve been going pretty regularly, at least once a week (such great moderation!). I usually go swimming with Sonja. She said yesterday that going to the pool is our version of going to coffee. Then she said, “That makes us a billion times cooler, you know.”

“That and like a billion other things, dude,” I said. “We’re  just cool. We can’t help it.” It’s helpful to say “dude” whenever you talk about how cool you are, especially when you’re in your mid-thirties.

“I tried to be ‘not cool’ one day, and failed,” Sonja said.

“It’s the risk you take being us,” I proclaimed. Uh huh.

Anyway, when you join, you can get a free consultation with one of the trainers, who will give you a basic training program that you can design to suit your own needs. After that, they’ll keep track of you for 12 weeks and answer any questions you might have as you go along. This is perfect, since I’ve been wanting to do more than swim, but I don’t feel like I know my way around the weight room yet. It will give me a chance to get acquainted.

My appointment is on Friday. I’ll let ya’ll know how it goes.

How’s the pool there? Crowded?

It’s not crowded when we go, which is during the day. It’s actually just perfect. Enough people to not feel dead, but not so many you can’t swim freely. Usually there are at least 3-4 other folks swimming laps, and the kid’s area is often empty or only has 2-3 kids in it.

In the evenings, there is a family swim that starts at 8pm or so I believe, and I’ve driven by the building at that time and the pool looks a bit crowded. In the evenings I think it picks up more.

Which Y is it, Holls? One in Shoreline?

I used to swim ALL THE TIME and gave it up about 7 years ago due to issues with being unable to not be a complete idiot about it (hello, battles with moderation!). But I have missed it so much and have been thinking lately it might be okay to try going just once a week and see what happens. Since I work from home Fridays, I could swing a weekday day swim, probably. Crowded pools are the WORST — there is literally nothing more torturous for me than a crowded lap lane. But it sounds like it’s awesome during the day. Ahh, swimming. I love how quiet and personal that sport is.

Yep, it’s the one in Shoreline. I just love the place. The staff is so friendly, the building is kept very clean, and the people I run into and chat with seem to feel like it belongs to them, in the best sense. It really feels like a community center.

You should totally come swim! I’d come with ya!

I’d come too! I:)

I’ve been thinking of getting back into swimming also, with the free time I have lately, but the public pool near me just doesn’t interest me (would have to share with Ballard HIgh School – um yeah, just what i want to do, parade around in a swim suit near high schoolers). And Olympic gym is too expensive. And LA fitness is 3 lanes wide only and no towels and sometimes grody. So I have been lazy and not explored any other options.

I’m contemplating joining my Y here in SF too and discontinuing my gym membership simply because the Y is cheaper AND i want swim lessons!

your post on the fitbit makes me want one. hmmm, i’m contemplating it now.

Oooh, have fun. I love knowing my way around a weight room.

Someday i might join that gym. Being able to actually swim would be a plus. Right now i’m just hanging on until the quarter starts to heat up and the attendance at the pool starts to taper off. My last couple of swims have been a bit disappointing because of lane issues.

Sonja – Yeah, you come too!

Camelama – I’m picky about pools too, and I would probably eschew your options as well. I want to feel like the place is clean, not too crowded, and I’m not The One Large Woman. At the YMCA there are many different body shapes, and everyone is friendly toward everyone else. At the 24Fitness I used to go to, that wasn’t at all the case.

Jen – Yeah, the Y is great! I think you should do it! We have swim lessons at ours, too, and I’d like to try that sometime. I think I could benefit from someone helping me swim more efficiently.

Megan – Yeah, so far I haven’t noticed any lines or problems at our facility, but I’m guessing when the crowd shows up in the evening that it gets more frustrating. The consultation should be great for me, yeah. I definitely know basic things to do with weights, but I feel a little self-conscious having never used their equipment before. I’ll feel more confident having gotten the orientation.

Meg – Fridays around 10:30am are a great time to swim at the pool at Dale Turner YMCA (where Hollie and I go.) I have several guest passes that I need to use by the end of the year so anytime you’d like to try, just let me know. (I bet Hollie has the guest passes too.)

I do, I do! I have 12 of them.
