Post-flu: food is confusing

July 30, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

My body is a bit of a mess lately. Ever since that flu hit a week ago, I’ve been feeling awful. I’m exhausted all the time. I keep trying to do a few minutes of exercise, to get that effect where doing a little exercise gives you energy, but I can barely keep going longer [...]

Done being sick, now just exhausted

July 28, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

Thanks for the well-wishes! I’m doing much better. My instestines still feel like soldiers walking back from war, but I’m treating that with a lot of fresh vegetable juice. It’s impressive to me how exhausted one can feel for daaaaays after just 36 hours of the flu.

Cholesterol and celiac tests are in

July 24, 2009 by hollie My Health

I got a call from my doctor’s office. The bloodwork came back, and the celiac test was negative. “So you can eat wheat with abandon!”, the nurse said. Hmmmmmm. Okay. I’m sure we’ll come back to this at some point, won’t we?
My cholesterol is what really concerned me.
Here’s the current test:
Total: 188
HDL: 42
LDL: 105
TRI: 206 [...]

Hollie is no longer, I am: Lump

July 23, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

Just in time for my beloved husband’s birthday, I am sick. That whole thing earlier, with the eating cookies for breakfast and my karmic punishment being that they contained butter, and now I’m all sick and stuff? Yeah, well, it turns out karma wasn’t done. I’ve been in bed since then, writhing around like a [...]

Living dairy-free is frustrating sometimes

July 23, 2009 by hollie Panic and Anxiety Issues

While I realize that there are worse things in the world than not being able to eat dairy products, like say elephantitis, or a third (or fourth) nipple, or having a few dozen nails shot though your head, it is sincerely frustrating to have to turn down every treat that comes your way because someone, [...]

30 minutes of stationary cycling later

July 22, 2009 by hollie Exercise and Fitness

and I have concluded one thing:
If you’re going to read a book while your knees are pumping up and down, do not try to highlight at the same time. The text now looks like my four-year-old got her hands on an orange pen and went to town. Which is sort of apropos, since the book [...]

Charlotte’s post about the Diet Wars, and the elephant in the room

July 22, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

I just discovered a blog that I’m enjoying a lot, and added to my sidebar under “Fitness”. It’s called The Great Fitness Experiment, and it’s written by one Charlotte Hilton Andersen. She writes about fitness and nutrition, with a side dish of hilarity, and I’ve found myself going through her archives and reading back through [...]

Let’s get physical! PHYSICAL! I wanna get physical!

July 21, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

I just amused myself and Meg, made some of you want to hurl, and probably confused the younger generations.
YOUR WELCOME.
I went to the doctor this morning, for my yearly physical. I told him about the elimination diet, and how I’m still having problems with being stiff and sore at night and in the mornings, and [...]

The perks of being married to a programmer

July 16, 2009 by hollie Deep and Meaningful Commentary

One of the annoying things about doing an elimination diet, or trying to find out any useful information from your day to day routines, is that to do so you have to be fairly religious about writing everything down. EVERYTHING. This can get really old after awhile, yet it’s so important, especially when you’re trying [...]

Staying Heart-Healthy Part 2: The Diet Wars, cont.

July 16, 2009 by hollie Omnivory Pros and Cons

The longer I write this blog and read about nutrition, the more interested I become in the idea that diet is the way that we can stay healthy into old age. The key to longevity, as far as I can tell, is to avoid heart disease in cancer. Heart disease is the leading cause of [...]
