While organizing the kitchen yesterday it became clear I needed a solution to my spices. I ended up finding this one, which I think I’ll set up (or make Jason install for me, muah!) next month.
While looking at DIY spice rack ideas, I also found this, called, “Knife Storage Solutions“:

What kills me is how the chalk shopping list is RIGHT NEXT TO THE BIGGEST BLADE. Of course, these people also needed to label “KNIVES”, so…..
One would hope that in a real kitchen the blades would all be turned the other way, and/or the writing would take place away from anything sharp. I do like the idea of hanging up knives on a magnetic strip. Ours are in a block right now, which takes up counter space and makes it so that you have to guess which paring knife you need by the handle. I’ve seen the Martha Stewart solution of just laying them all down in a drawer, but I’m sure that would end in a bloody mess, no matter how I had them sorted just so.
I love my knife block:
voodoo knife block
since all the knives come out the back, you can see which one you need. of course, it takes way more space than a traditional knife block. but the coolness factor makes up for it…
Butcher block holders are OK if all the knives are cleaned before being put away, but don’t work in a deli or butcher area in a store. I am constantly talking deli owners into throwing those things away, because the workers will put them in and out of the slots. The magnetic strip is easy to clean in case you need to use multiple knives during the workday. There is also the kind that hangs on nails and detached from the wall for daily cleaning; failure to daily clean it is the most common critical deficiency I find in a store I’ve never inspected before.
Wow, I never even thought about that. Makes me wonder how clean the slots on my never-been-washed several-years-old knife block are. I don’t make a habit of putting away dirty knives or anything, but it seems like statistically it must have happened by accident at least a few times.
I have one of those magnetic strips right over the sink. I also have a block for some other knives. I surely like the convenience of the knives on the magnet. :D
